DISC HERNIATION

WHAT IS IT?

The improper use of the spine, resulting from factors such as poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, excessive physical activity, genetic predisposition, smoking, poor nutrition, low water intake, and excess weight, can lead to the progressive wear of the intervertebral discs. This wear can occur in different regions of the spine and, when it affects a disc, can progress to a herniated disc.

Inside each intervertebral disc, there is a substance called the nucleus, which has a consistency similar to that of toothpaste. Over time, gradual wear causes this nucleus to bulge outward from the disc. When this happens, it can press on the spinal nerves, resulting in the characteristic pain of a herniated disc.

Herniated discs are more common in the lumbar and cervical regions because these areas are more exposed to constant movement and bear most of the body's load. Therefore, taking care of spinal health is essential to prevent this painful condition and improve quality of life!
